OIPA began a campaign to protect the Sled Dogs of Greenland after receiving many letters from members league and citizens concerned about the situation of these animals.
From Greenland Home Rule Government's press release, we have learned that since the Danish tabloid Ekstrabladet featured the story of the neglected and abused dogs on 5 February 2007, the Greenland Home Rule has been receiving protest e-mails from Scandinavia, and the wave of protest has now spread to 21 countries throughout the world. They have received e-mails from countries in Europe, in North, Central and South America, and in Asia.
The Government of Greenland recognises the extreme gravity of the situation and Minister of Industry Mr Siverth K. Heilmann intends to take the matter up with the Government. Neglect and abuse of sled dogs should under no circumstances take place. It amounts to animal cruelty and is illegal under current law. Heilmann has offered to participate in municipal meetings in the dog sledge district. He thinks that certain groups must change their attitude toward how sledge dogs should be kept.
The act on animal protection entered into force in 2003, to protect, amongst others, sledge dogs. Furthermore, since 1998 an act on keeping sledge dogs has been in force.
After receiving thousands of mails of protest the Greenland Government tries to find a solution to protect sled dogs from abuse, and wrote a 2007 action plan for efforts against the abuse of sled dogs.
The action plan is to ensure more information and local involvement with support from the government and to ensure that all parties involved engage in closer cooperation with more dialogue and understanding for the wellbeing of sled dogs.

The site wants to raise the animal friend’s awareness of the suffering of the Greenland dogs in. These dogs, which live far from all touristy destinations by themselves and have nobody to speak for them are the victims of the structural changes in the social life of the Greenlandic people.
