| “Animals Asia Foundation”
has recently received hysterical letters from distraught Chinese
pet lovers across China who are terrified by some Government departments'
new clampdown on unregistered pet dogs. Dogs are being brutally
confiscated, in some cases beaten to death in front of their owners,
or taken to Government pounds and killed in horrendous ways.
In Guangzhou in particular (a major Chinese city), the licence
fee to register pet dogs is an exhorbitant RMB10,000 (US$1,235)
for the first year and RMB6,000 (US$741) per year thereafter. Naturally,
the fee is beyond the reach of most pet owners and they are living
in terror of having their dog confiscated and killed in a brutal
fashion.
Some Government officials are enticing people to report on their
neighbours who have unregistered pet dogs, by offering to pay them
10% of the fine. Dog killing teams are patrolling the cities looking
for unregistered.
Please write a letter to the Chinese authorities in Guangzhou (capital
of Guangdung Province) expressing your outrage at this brutal dog
eradication campaign.
