Every June 14th people from all over the world come together to speak out against the export of live animals.

This year, the theme chosen is: “Hell Tours”, a perfect concept for expressing and representing the suffering of millions of farmed animals transported every year in nightmarish and horrifying conditions.

Animals are forced to travel over long distances for days and thousands of kilometres, crammed into overcrowded trucks or vessels and often transported in terrible hygiene and health conditions. They cannot rest or lie down at all, most of the time they do not have sufficient access to food and water and are exposed to extreme temperatures.

Animals subjected to unimaginable sufferings and that will die once arrived at the place of destination. They do not have any chance and if they survive, exhausted from the journey, they will anyway face a bloody end.

Animal protection organizations and individuals are asking globally for some times now to definitively ban live exports, at least for giving more dignity to these sentient beings already born to die.

OIPA together with other Italian and international organizations calls Europe to review and reform the EU transport regulation including: a ban on export of animals outside the EU (in order not to repeat tragedies such as those that happened on Trust1, Elbeik and Karim Allah vessels); the prohibition of journeys exceeding 8 hours and the transport of unweaned animals.

EU laws on live transport and export are cruel, outdated and unfit for purpose. Time and time again, investigations have exposed the failure of EU Member States to enforce the regulations. Even when the law is followed, the animals suffer.

The EU is currently in the middle of reviewing the laws which govern how live animals are transported within EU borders, and how they are exported to outside countries. On June 14th, the Ban Live Exports International Day of Awareness, we must remind EU policymakers that European Citizens stand against the horrific treatment of animals, despicably permitted under current EU Law.

We must keep the pressure on to #BanLiveEports
