Following our letter to the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Mrs. Stella Kyriakides in which we have asked to further investigate the case of cattle on board of Karim Allah and ElBeik vessels for over two months, we had the pleasure to receive their reply.

OIPA International, as many other associations, asked to:

  • inspect the conditions in which bovines have been transported for almost three months, if we consider that animals on ElBeik are actually still travelling;
  • verify any contravention to the Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the Protection of live animals during transport
  • urgently end live transport in the EU as incompatible with the Article 13 of Title II of the Lisbon Treaty that came into force in 2009 amending the ‘Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union’ (TFEU) and has introduced the recognition of animals as sentient beings.
