Stichting For the Strays – Paws of Greece Foundation, recently included in the list of our member league associations, is a small team of volunteers that helps and takes care of stray dogs and cats in Trifiliá, Filatrá and Kyparissiá (Peloponnese). They try to prevent the growth of stray animals by supporting neutering and spaying programs all funded entirely by donations, provide food, create awareness among the population, secure to the weakest strays a safe place where to be sheltered and find adoption for some of them (mainly in Netherlands – HQ of the association).
In 2020, Giannis one of the volunteer in Kyparissiá was evicted and had to leave the house and the rented piece of land in which over 70 dogs and cats where sheltered. A terrible situation to face because all those animals were no longer safe and protected and with the outbreak of COVID-19 everything got worse. No adoptions, restrictions for volunteers and animal rescuers, little money collected for food, medical bills and TNR programs.
The association started a crowdfunding campaign trying to collect the money necessary to buy a piece of land and start their own safe haven in order to guarantee more security for the future of their animals. After two years of immense trying and thanks to the incredible support of donors, the association was able to secure the first deposit for a new area, the ‘safe place to be’ for their dogs and cats.
They still have a very long way ahead and need all the support they can get. Not only to fence the land and build the entrance gate as first step, but also to buy kennels, continue to feed stray animals and give them medical care and treatment.
