Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals (KSPA) “Lucky Strand” is an Ukrainian animal welfare association and a OIPA’s member league. In recent months, it has been working diligently to care for its own animals and those at the Temporary Animal Shelter at VDNG in Kyiv. There was a significant amount of work to be completed, and the results have exceeded their expectations.

Support for the Temporary Shelter at VDNG

KSPA “Lucky Strand” team has worked at the Temporary Animal Shelter at VDNG in Kyiv, “One of our greatest challenges and at the same time one of our most significant achievements” says Alyona Zatsarynna, president of the association.

Since the end of March 2022, for four months, KSPA “Lucky Strand”‘s team was the first and only animal welfare organization that took part in establishing the Temporary Shelter for animals. They closely cooperated with the city authorities and carried out all shelter duties, including:

  • organizing a team of more than 70 volunteers;
  • providing twice-daily dog walking and feeding;
  • ensuring regular cleaning;
  • helping with the socialization of unapproachable animals;
  • assisting veterinarians during treatments and procedures;
  • organizing the receipt of humanitarian aid for the shelter

KSPA “Lucky Strand”‘s volunteers involvement at the shelter continued even after municipal staff were hired – until 2025. They assisted with dog walking, promoted animals on social media and information platforms, and supported their adoption.

Support for Municipal Veterinary Clinics

In the meanwhile, KSPA “Lucky Strand” focused on their own foster animals, who are kept in paid boarding facilities, ensuring their medical care, food, and rehoming and, beyond the VDNG shelter, they regularly visited municipal veterinary clinics in Kyiv. We photographed and walked the animals there to increase their chances of adoption. This significantly accelerated rehoming for many animals outside the VDNG shelter.

We are proud to have been the first to take full responsibility for the animals’ care at the shelter and to have contributed to providing proper conditions and helping so many dogs and cats find loving families” says Alyona Zatsarynna.
