Shao Ran is an animal rights advocate, independent public interest activist, former whale trainer, and vegan. She is widely recognized for her courageous journey from within the marine entertainment industry to becoming one of its most articulate and determined critics.
Once known as one of the leading female whale trainers in South China, Shao Ran experienced a profound moral awakening after witnessing the suffering of animals kept in captivity for human entertainment. Her bond with Sophie, a beluga whale, became a turning point in her life and led her to question the foundations of an industry that transforms sentient beings into performers and commodities.
Choosing to leave that world behind, Shao Ran dedicated her voice to animals who cannot speak in human language. Her advocacy has since expanded beyond marine mammals to include farm animals, laboratory animals, companion animals, and all those whose suffering often remains hidden from public view.
For nearly a decade, Shao Ran has worked as an independent activist, without institutional backing, a large team, or significant financial support. Through public talks, exhibitions, educational initiatives, and grassroots outreach across China, she has encouraged audiences to reconsider the relationship between humans and non-human animals.

An interview featuring Shao Ran and renowned Chinese journalist Zhang Yue went viral on social media, deeply resonating with viewers and bringing the issue of animal ethics to a much broader public audience.
This response showed that her message was not only the story of one individual, but also the sign of a growing collective awareness.
