Support Stray Animals in Ankara

Our member association, Bir Pati de Sen Tut, located in Ankara, Turkey, urgently needs our help to continue their vital work aiding stray animals in distress. They are facing significant challenges in carrying out their daily activities due to financial constraints, and they are reaching out to OIPA for support.

Key Issues and Urgent Needs

Vaccinations and Spaying/Neutering

Bir Pati de Sen Tut often finds in their feeding areas abandoned puppies or mother dogs dumped while pregnant. This uncontrolled abandonment causes the increase of stray animals on the territory, and a higher rate of mortality caused by the spreading of diseases among puppies and young dogs.

Sometimes, due to a lack of financial resources, puppies cannot be vaccinated on time, which can lead to illness. This was the recent case when a donation from OIPA, intended for vaccinations or sterilization, had to be used for a different purpose, specifically to treat puppies who, unfortunately, contracted distemper. This heartbreaking situation occurred because we couldn’t secure sufficient funds for timely vaccinations, and local vet was unable to extend further credit. As a result, it ended up spending far more on treatment than it would have on preventive measures.
Thankfully, stray puppies have fully recovered, and released back to their area. While the outcome was positive, it’s a painful reminder of the challenges stray animals and volunteers face daily.

The cost for fully vaccinating a puppy is €125 (2 doses of DHPPL – 1 dose of kennel cough – 1 dose of Rabies – 1 round of deworming and flea/tick/mange prevention). There are 17 puppies in urgent need of vaccinations

The cost of sterilization ranges from €150 to €250 per dog, depending on the payment terms. There are 10 dogs in urgent need of castration, with 17 more puppies expected to need sterilization within a few months.

Injured and Sick Animals

The team of Bir Pati is also caring for a range of injured and sick animals, including a dog badly bitten by other dogs in a feeding area, dogs suffering from broken bones, dog that is paralyzed, and puppies with diarrhea who were abandoned in a box without air. Bir Pati de Sen Tut works closely with local vets, but the high costs of veterinary care, especially in the context of inflation and official regulations, are a massive burden. For example, a recent surgery for a dog injured by a car cost €2,000.

Feeding Needs

The feeding requirements for the stray animals in the two feeding zones are significant. They need 250 bags (15 kg each) of food per month for the dogs, but can only afford 60 packets. For the cats, the monthly need is 10 packets of each brand, but they can only afford 5 of each. This leaves many animals hungry, and they are often purchasing food on credit.

How You Can Help

The strain on Bir Pati de Sen Tut is immense, but with your invaluable support, we can continue to help them care for these animals and provide life-saving services.
Donations will go directly towards feeding, veterinary care, vaccinations, and spaying/neutering efforts, ensuring that these animals receive the care they desperately need. Please consider donating to make a real difference in the lives of these animals in Ankara.
