Street Animal Sterilization Program in Mefi DIVISION West Region of Cameroon. We want to support this OIPA Cameroon project to reduce the number of stray animals and the high death rate among dogs and cats. These volunteers have been active for many years and are driven by a strong passion for animals. Now, we would like to support them in their new mission.
Cameroon is home to an overwhelming population of nearly 9 million homeless dogs and cats. These stray animals are often perceived as nuisances and threats due to frequent bites and the spread of rabies. Without government-sponsored spay/ neuter programs, many residential associations, businesses, and universities have resorted to inhumane methods such as catching, relocating, or poisoning stray animals to address this crisis.
OIPA Cameroon’s Street Animal Sterilization Program offers a compassionate and effective solution. By increasing sterilizations, they can humanely control the population of stray dogs and cats, preventing countless births into a life of misery. Sterilized animals are less likely to engage in territorial and mating fights, making them more adoptable and reducing their impact on communities.
OIPA Cameroon have saved over 2,500 animals, spayed and neutered more than 2000 animals, and facilitated the adoption of over 440 dogs.
Now their goal are:
- To sterilize/treat 400 stray dogs in the MEFI division in West Region of Cameroon within 10 months.
- To increase awareness among businesses and residential complexes about humane methods of animal population control.
- To reduce rabies cases and dog bite incidents in MEFI division by 50% within 12 months of project completion.
An expert veterinary team, trained at World Veterinary Services, is ready to perform mass sterilizations in collaboration with the ministry of livestock Fisheries and Animal Industries.
Cost to sterilize dogs in MEFI division, broken down as follows:
- Dog Catchers: $ 3 per dog 250 trips per year -$750
- Sterilization/treatment: $11 per animal $4400
- Feeding: $1 per day per dog for familiarization x 3 days $1200
- Miscellaneous Expenses: Medical supplies $680
- Long-term Care for Injured/Sick Animals $400
Making a great difference is something we can do with your help.
