Every year on 5 June, World Environment Day serves as a global reminder of the importance of protecting our planet and addressing the environmental challenges that threaten the future of all living beings.
From climate change and deforestation to pollution and biodiversity loss, the environmental crisis is one of the defining issues of our time. Yet, one crucial aspect is often overlooked in discussions about sustainability and conservation: the welfare and protection of animals.
At OIPA ETS, we believe that animal welfare, biodiversity conservation and environmental protection are deeply interconnected. It is impossible to protect nature without protecting the animals that are an essential part of it.
Animals Are Essential to Healthy Ecosystems
Every species plays a unique role within the ecosystems it inhabits.
Pollinators support food production, predators help maintain ecological balance, and countless species contribute to the health of forests, rivers, oceans and grasslands. Together, these ecosystems provide vital services that sustain life on Earth, including clean air, clean water, fertile soil and climate regulation.
When species disappear or populations decline, ecosystems become less resilient and more vulnerable to environmental degradation. The consequences are felt not only by wildlife, but also by human communities that depend on healthy natural environments for their livelihoods and well-being.
Protecting animals therefore means protecting the natural systems upon which all life depends.
The Environmental Crisis Is Also an Animal Welfare Crisis
Around the world, animals face increasing threats caused by human activities.
Habitat destruction, deforestation, pollution, climate change, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources and wildlife trafficking continue to place enormous pressure on countless species. Many animals are losing the habitats they need to survive, while others are forced to adapt to rapidly changing environmental conditions.
Climate change is already affecting migration patterns, breeding seasons and food availability for many species. Extreme weather events, prolonged droughts, floods and rising temperatures are creating additional challenges for wildlife and ecosystems across the globe.
These issues are not separate from animal welfare. They are directly linked to the survival, health and well-being of animals everywhere.
OIPA’s Commitment Around the World
Across its international network, OIPA ETS works every day to promote a future where animals, people and the environment can thrive together.
In several countries, OIPA ETS representatives and member organizations support initiatives that go beyond the protection of individual animals and contribute to broader environmental objectives. These efforts include wildlife conservation, environmental education, habitat protection, biodiversity preservation and community engagement.
In Cameroon, for example, OIPA has supported projects focused on the conservation of forests and wildlife, including efforts to protect endangered species . Through environmental awareness activities and collaboration with local communities, these initiatives contribute to the protection of biodiversity while promoting a more sustainable relationship between people and nature.
Similar efforts carried out across the OIPA network demonstrate that animal protection and environmental protection are not separate goals, but part of the same mission.
A Shared Responsibility
Protecting the environment requires action from governments, institutions, businesses, organizations and individuals alike.
Every person can contribute by making more sustainable choices, reducing waste, supporting conservation initiatives, respecting wildlife and promoting a culture of compassion toward animals and nature.
The challenges facing our planet are complex, but meaningful change is possible when environmental protection and animal welfare are addressed together.
