Baloo is another German Shepherd rescued by our volunteers in Italy. An elderly dog, thought to be around 12 years old, abandoned on his own after so many years spent with a family that was supposed to take care of him until his last day. Used to a home life, he was struggling to survive on the streets. Transferred to the local municipal shelter, Baloo wouldn’t have survived inside a kennel without care and attention. The veterinary check revealed a stomach infection due to the heavy ingestion of bones that the dog ate in order to ease hunger. He was also treated for giardiasis, and suffering from osteoarthritis, he became too weak to move. For this reason, volunteers decided to moved him to a foster home.

Cared for by a volunteer, Baloo is undergoing treatment with monoclonal injections for osteoarthritis which help him get up on his own. OIPA volunteers are assisting him, monitoring the dog in his daily walks, so that he does not lose his muscles and continues to walk a little every day.

Unfortunately, treatments have a considerable cost and OIPA volunteers need help to offer Baloo a good quality of life.
