A shepherd tied his dog with a rope to his car and dragged him for over a kilometer to “teach him a lesson”, as he preferred to play with other dogs in the field instead of listening to his calls. This is what happened near Amatrice, one of the sites of the recent earthquake in Italy.

The Police Officers and the Civil Protection and local police of Milan, noticed the terrible scene and the trace of blood left on the ground and chased the man by car. The man attempted to escape, even accellerating, but the police forced him to stop.

The OIPA volunteers, already in the area for other controls, called by the authorities, immediately contacted a veterinarian who visited the animal. The young shepherd dog was clearly scared, with damaged and bleeding paws, and with high body temperature. He was struggling to breathe and it was necessary to heat him with a thermal blanket.

The man, a well-known shepherd in the area, doesn’t shown regret for the torture, reporting that he had already done much worse to other animals in his farm. For this reason, in addition to the criminal complaint for animal abuse, he will be subjected to further checks by the Police. The dog was legal custody awarded to the OIPA person in charge, Enrico Piacenza, and he was temporarily transferred to the health kennel of Rieti. In the coming days he will be moved to a private hosting.

“We’re already facing dramatic moments in this region, and it’s terrible to see such cruel acts of violence against a helpless animal – commented Enrico Piacenza, OIPA Piemonte Eco-Zoophilous Guards coordinator and legal guardian of the dog. We thanks the police and the Civil Protection that, despite the earthquake emergencies, rushed and cooperated in order to punish the responsible”.

Violence against animals, that unfortunately still occur nowadays, is particularly regrettable in areas already affected by a tragedy, as the earthquake that struck the central regions of Italy and that has destroyed dozens of human and animal lives.
