The Ministry of Environment and Forests accorded highest protection to the Asian Elephant in India. There are now national Guidelines about this topics:
- Ownership certificate
- Transportation of elephants
- Norms and standard for transportation
- Housing of elephants
- Care of elephants
- Feeding of elephants
- Work load of elephants
- Retirement of elephants
- Records to be kept
- Cutting tusks
- Acts which are tantamount to cruelty to elephants
The states will formulate their own rules following the guidelines.
This a step forward for the protection of elephants and their safeguard, still a lot has to be done but thanks to OIPA India and the national representative Mr. Naresh Kadyan the welfare of animals in India will improve remarkably.
